We thoroughly enjoyed attending the Pro Landscaper Business Awards 2020 last month, in the East Wintergarden at Canary Wharf, and were honoured (as many of you may already know) with an award. It was very pleasing to see such a great turnout from the Landscape Industry as a whole, but notably not many landscape architects, despite two awards categories focusing on our slice of the industry.

Winning the ‘Landscape Architecture Studio under 10 Employees’ category, we were really pleased to see young practice Design Studio 31 win, and it was great to meet Edward Flaxman and Alex Jobber, two of the Directors. Alex later posted on LinkedIn with the following:

‘So proud of the Design Studio 31 team for bringing home this award last week. Humbled to have stood beside immensely talented colleagues that we highly respect in the shortlist and humbled further still that the judges saw the little light that is on in our practice and gave us this award. We are working hard to strive to do things a little differently and this is wind in our sails to keep pushing in that direction, watering the seeds we are growing and having the courage to strive for what we believe in.’

Obviously doing the right thing there…Another landscape architecture company winning, not one of the profession specific categories, but the ‘Industry Collaboration’ category was Davies White (Adam White (LI President) and Andrée Davies) unsurprisingly for their work on the ‘RHS Back to Nature’ garden at Chelsea, a wonderful and extremely popular show garden. Well done to them!

We were all pictured on stage with Andrew Wilson FLI and Chairman of the Society of Garden Designers Andrew is a Fellow and former Chairman of the Society of Garden Designers Andrew is a Fellow and former Chairman of the Society of Garden Designers and John Wyer CMLI of Bowles and Wyer.

With respect to our category, ‘Landscape Architecture Studio over 10 Employees’, the judges’ comments were as follows:

“terra firma Consultancy, is an impressive and innovative landscape architectural practice. Together with its two overseas offices, its work has had a positive impact on a local, national and global scale, with projects in over 30 countries spanning six continents. All new graduates are mentored through the Pathway to Chartership and interaction with local primary and secondary schools provides the platform to talk about the profession and raise awareness of the environment. terra firma supports the landscape profession and is keen to continue to play its part in saving the planet so therefore deserves the industry recognition for its contribution to the sector.”

We are suitably chuffed! Hopefully next year there will be a larger presence of landscape architects to swell the numbers… it may need a bigger venue!
