Another factor to consider is the impact of climate change, which could have a number of impacts in terms of land availability and population.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps one possible direction for the Green Belt could be that it is retained as a principle, but\u00a0 assimilated into a new larger GI approach to the entire country. An approach that doesn\u2019t just adopt the traditional focus on urban vs. rural and managing impacts but a more holistic view of landscape \u2013 since the protected rural clearly won\u2019t be protected forever, the more effective integration of GI and combined land uses into urban growth could mean the difference between complete loss of valued characteristics and their retention in a new or adapted form.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1806\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1806\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1806\" src=\"http:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/DSC_0057-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"How much longer can we \/ should we protect our green belts from development?\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/DSC_0057-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/DSC_0057.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1806\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">How much longer can we \/ should we protect our green belts from development?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In theory conservation and construction can work in harmony, just as sustainable development can readily be achieved. However, these concepts require buy-in by all involved and a commitment to change even if it means flying in the face of convention. It\u2019s right to rethink the green belt at this point but is it actually an unsustainable concept no matter how well restored, transformed or managed?<\/p>\n        <div class=\"booster-block
