As the rain increased to such an extent as to almost obscure the view, I found myself thoroughly soaking wet and took shelter halfway up in the hermitage.<\/p>\n<p>It was here looking out at the view that something didn\u2019t feel right about Stourhead, the problem not being the mix of classical architecture, or the loosely based classical references, but the view \u2013 or more precisely the lack of it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_237\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-237\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Stourhead-Nov-2011-0125.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-237\" title=\"Stourhead Nov 2011 012\" src=\"http:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Stourhead-Nov-2011-0125-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Stourhead-Nov-2011-0125-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Stourhead-Nov-2011-0125-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Stourhead-Nov-2011-0125.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sheltering in the hermitage and contemplating the obscured view<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Where was the view? All I could see through the rain was a mass of beech trees. Earlier on, following the route down from the house, brief glimpses of the pantheon and grotto would jump suddenly into view but be quickly replaced by an almost claustrophobic feeling of being enclosed by trees.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The original plan for Stourhead, dated 1779, shows the careful alignment of each element of the garden with views across, or to some point of interest. Should we even be concerned that the original intention has been lost? After all does not everything change with time?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then again maybe it is time for a re-evaluation of our historical landscapes and a carefully considered approach to trying to regain what has been lost.
