{"id":2599,"date":"2019-08-23T09:00:22","date_gmt":"2019-08-23T08:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/?p=2599"},"modified":"2022-10-20T12:34:23","modified_gmt":"2022-10-20T11:34:23","slug":"what-makes-a-landmark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/what-makes-a-landmark\/","title":{"rendered":"What makes a landmark?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='booster-block booster-read-block'>\n                <div class=\"twp-read-time\">\n                \t<i class=\"booster-icon twp-clock\"><\/i> <span>Read Time:<\/span>2 Minute, 37 Second                <\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n<p> According to the dictionary definition, a landmark is described as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>An object or feature of a landscape or town that is easily seen and recognized from a distance, especially one that enables someone to establish their location.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>At terra\nfirma we undertake landscape assessments of all scales from district-wide\ncapacity and sensitivity studies to site-specific opportunity and constraints investigations.\nOne of the things which we try to determine is if there are any valued views\neither into or out from the site. If there is a particular view which is\nbelieved to be important then this is a feature which adds value to the\nlandscape and we would try to safeguard. But who decides if it\u2019s important? And\nwho even decides what is a landmark in these circumstances? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some are\neasy to determine- the view of a church spire breaking the horizon in the\ndistance is an obvious one and almost certainly valued, either in aesthetic\nterms as part of a wider landscape composition or as a wayfinding device.\nBefore GIS and Sat Nav these were obviously more important as our forebears\nwalked or rode from village to village, being able to move with certainly from\none church spire towards the next regardless of their ability to use a compass\nor read a map. \u00a0However, are they still\nvalued today? And how were they perceived when they were first built? Salisbury\nCathedral spire must certainly have been a \u2018landmark\u2019 when it was first\nconstructed in 1320, but was it universally valued? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In more\nrecent times our ability to build tall and distinctive structures can sometimes\nresult in a proliferation of landmarks which may not be quite so valued. On a\ntrip to Paris views of the Eiffel Tower, for example, are often an unexpected\ndelight as it appears at the end of streets or across the rooftops and\ncertainly and aid to navigation. However, when its construction was proposed it\nwas met with some hostility, notably a letter in \u2018Les Temps\u2019 signed by 47\nartists including Zola, Dumas fils and de Maupassant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"651\" height=\"717\" src=\"http:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/eiffel-tower.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/eiffel-tower.jpg 651w, https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/eiffel-tower-272x300.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 651px) 100vw, 651px\" \/><figcaption>The Eiffel Tower, France<br>\u00a9 Keith Baker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The recent proliferation\nof new towers in London has also not been without controversy, some are\napplauded, some are loathed, others are simply refused planning permission.\u00a0 But even the most ugly tower block, if\nsufficiently prominent, would qualify as a landmark, especially if given a\ncatchy nickname.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is our\nrole in these studies to ascertain if, in our professional opinion, the views\nare likely to be generally considered positive or negative and that ultimately\nis very subjective. We all carry a certain amount of \u2018cultural baggage\u2019 with\nus, based on our personal tastes, education and heritage. We can try and put\nourselves in the position of \u2018the general public\u2019 and imagine if a landmark\nmight be seen as positive by a certain community but short of undertaking an\nextensive survey, like so much of the work of a Landscape Architect it comes\ndown to a personal judgement that we alone may ultimately have to defend.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img
