They benefit any space and improve the\ncommunity and urban environment, providing important habitats and promoting a\nsense of wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within their canopy lies a microclimate supporting a wide\nrange of biodiverse ecosystems, they provide shade on a summer day, cool down\nour cities, while cleaning polluted air and taking up excess water through\ntheir roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A scheme without trees looks sparse and flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are the sprinkling of fairy dust over an otherwise\nlacklustre scheme, instantly adding the feeling of greenery and cohesion to\nwhat could otherwise be an empty cold expanse of grey paving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pop a few on a plan here and there and instantly they\nprovide a sense of space and enclosure, like mini beach umbrellas on a sandy\nbeach, providing different colours, shapes and sizes and reducing the feeling\nof expanse and empty space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"9944\" height=\"5836\" src=\"http:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DSC_4539-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2620\"\/><figcaption> <em>\u201cIdeal conditions are rare within urban schemes with trees constrained between hard surfaces or planted in narrow planted beds or too close to buildings.\u201d<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Trees are popular; designers like them, planners like them\nand the public like them. There are few disadvantages with adding trees to any\nlandscape scheme. They add vertical interest and provide an ever changing vista\nthroughout the seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how often do designers consider the practicalities? \u00a0Far too often we as landscape architects\naren\u2019t involved with the planning stages only to pick up at detailed design\nstage, missing out on the important early stages of concept design,\nmasterplanning and coordination. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tree symbols look good on paper and are an essential element\nto visual representations. However, invariably they are used as a tool, added\nto a plan to provide the essential greenery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Placed at will with little regard to boring practicalities\nsuch as soil requirements, root space or taking into account that the 4m high\ntree may, with luck, in 25 years be over 12m tall and significantly wider than\nwhen planted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All trees benefit and thrive in an uncrowded space where\nthey are free to develop to maturity and thrive to produce a specimen tree\nworthy of any parkland environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, this is often not the case, especially within the\nurban environment where development space is at a premium and financial costs\noutweigh the potential benefits of an enhanced landscape environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although trees are not necessarily \u2018needy plants\u2019, even a small tree requires a minimum of 5\u00bdm\u00b3 of soil to thrive and a large tree a whopping 31m\u00b3 of soil. That is a significant volume of soil, ideally free rooting soil with plenty of water and air for healthy roots and with space to spread. Ideal conditions are rare within urban schemes with trees constrained between hard surfaces or planted in narrow planted beds or too close to buildings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there specific products out there that can be used to create ideal below ground conditions these are often not cheap options but if not used can lead to tree failure or poor, stunted growth \u2013 neither of which improve the landscape or environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what can we do as designers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind the mantra \u2018Right tree, right space\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Identify tree planting constraints early on in the design\nprocess. Ask yourself whether a tree will thrive in the available space, if not\nwill a shrub provide a similar aesthetic?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Locate trees where they can develop, maybe not to their full\npotential, but as a minimum to achieve healthy growth and longevity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the site conditions and match trees to their\nproposed locations. Although there is always an exception to the rule,\nespecially when it comes to pH. Trees more suited for acidic or alkaline\nconditions can survive on less than ideal pH soils providing they have ample\nrooting zone, good quality topsoil and are not in competition with planting more\nsuited for the onsite soil type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider each individual tree\u2019s form and eventual size at\nmaturity. Trees may seldom achieve their ideal height and spread but canopy\ngrowth and spread can easily be forgotten. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dead-tree-at-qa-e1573731728650-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dead-tree-at-qa-e1573731728650.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dead-tree-at-qa-e1573731728650-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid the temptation to cram in trees too closely to fill a\nspace, they may look like sticks when planted but with time they will grow and\nfill a space. Alternatively plant bigger trees, however there is a trade off as\nsmaller trees are more likely to survive and adapt to the conditions.\n\nFinally, the costs.\u00a0 Trees are not cheap. Is it better to provide\nseveral bigger specimen trees than a multitude of smaller trees planted at a\nhigh density?\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n        <div class=\"booster-block booster-reactions-block\">\n
