Several \u2018experts\u2019 independently see this new year heralding a mass yearning to get away from the fast-paced digital age and experience something a bit \u2018rustic\u2019. People will want to visit places where their Blackberries don\u2019t work. Apparently there\u2019ll be new markets in more adventurous tourism, with people wanting to explore places that have never appealed before. I expect that going somewhere without the luxury facilities we\u2019ve demanded in the past will also be a bit cheaper \u2013 perhaps not a coincidence.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This got me thinking about new doors opening for landscape architecture. The idea of exploring new places means that people will be visiting landscapes which perhaps aren\u2019t ready for people. The implications on the landscape \u2013 and landscape architecture \u2013 are potentially huge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-523\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/1-74.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-523\" title=\"Bonaire\" src=\"http:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/1-74-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"The landscape of Bonaire\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/1-74.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.terrafirmaconsultancy.com\/landscape-architect-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/1-74-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The small island of Bonaire in the South Caribbean is a fantastic example of where the social and political framework ensures that eco-tourism works well alongside the needs of the local community<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some truly awesome landscapes are those which we consider to be wildernesses. They\u2019re un-touched by human hand and we should think of them as the territory of nature. If humans are going to go there we need to find a balance between the needs of nature and the basic needs we have, to make a place \u2018fit-for-purpose\u2019 as somewhere humans can visit and enjoy. Sensitive design and then ongoing management are key and very much the domain of the landscape architect.<\/p>\n<p>The same could be said for places that aren\u2019t wildernesses as such, but are simply \u2018less explored\u2019. Here not only is there a delicate balance between the needs of humans and nature, but also between humans and humans. In all parts of the world the native communities who inhabit less explored landscapes have their cultural needs. As a landscape architect, I always find it fascinating to learn about the needs of local people. It is important to keep an open mind because sometimes those needs would never occur to me. The challenge is then to respect those needs and concurrently integrate the needs of our clients.
